Pass Labs
Simplicity, Class A, and the art of amplification.
Nelson Pass · USA (Auburn, California) · Specialist
- Design: Simplicity and Class A bias — fewer gain stages, maximum linearity.
- Tendency: Warm, textured solid-state with tube-like midrange richness.
- Trade-off: Heat and power draw for Class A linearity; First Watt sacrifices power for intimacy.
Philosophy
Pass Labs designs emphasise simplicity and Class A operation where practical. First Watt is the low-power offshoot, exploring single-ended solid-state and unusual topologies.
Nelson Pass approaches amplifier design as a craft. His circuits use fewer gain stages than most competitors, and he prefers Class A biasing for its linearity even at the cost of efficiency. The result is an amplifier that runs hot and draws significant power but rewards with a tonal richness unusual in solid-state.
Leadership & Origin
Nelson Pass founded Threshold in 1974, pioneering Class A solid-state amplification. He left to start Pass Labs in 1991, and later created First Watt as a personal workshop for experimental low-power designs. He openly shares schematics and encourages DIY, contributing to a uniquely transparent design culture.
Sonic Character
Pass amplifiers tend toward warmth and midrange richness for solid-state. First Watt designs emphasise texture and intimacy at the cost of dynamic scale.

Strengths
- Class A operation delivers exceptional linearity and midrange richness
- Warm, textured solid-state — closer to tubes than most competitors
- First Watt offers unique single-ended solid-state designs
- Bulletproof build quality and long service life
- Open design culture — schematics shared publicly
Trade-offs
- Class A runs hot and draws significant idle power
- First Watt designs are power-limited — need efficient speakers
- Premium pricing across the range
Pairing Guidance
Pass Labs works across a range of speakers. First Watt pairs best with high-efficiency speakers — similar territory to low-power tube amps. The First Watt SIT-based single-ended Class A designs sit within the Musical Communication School as the American single-ended-solid-state expression of the school's chain-coherence commitment — the same chain-as-system argument the school carries through tube SET, expressed through a different device family. The broader Pass Labs Class A push-pull lineage (X.5 / X.8 / XA series) is the school-adjacent American Class A expression.
Pass Labs main-line amplifiers work across a wide range of speakers. First Watt designs pair best with high-efficiency speakers (93 dB+), similar to low-power tube territory. Both lines complement neutral-to-bright DACs, adding warmth and body.
Design Families
Class A and Class AB designs with substantial power. Warm for solid-state, controlled, composed.
Pairing: Works across a wide range of speakers, including moderate-to-low-sensitivity designs.
Low-power single-ended solid-state. Emphasises texture, intimacy, and midrange nuance.
Pairing: Pairs with high-efficiency speakers (93 dB+). Similar territory to low-power tube amps.
